JAYALAKSHMI THANKACHY

GYACHI MASTER ARTIST AND DESIGNER

Born in the Kollam district of Kerala to a musically inclined family, Jayalakshmi Thankachy is the “Master Artist and Designer for Gyachi’s “Wings and Petals” Collection . Jaya, as she is fondly referred to, has an innate connection with art and music .She pursued this passion by formally studying Carnatic music and art along with chemistry. She started her career as a designer and worked with many NGO’s as an illustrator before venturing out on her own. She is a Nature lover and frequently draws inspiration from it.

“My belief is that creativity has no limitations and a small spark that inspires you can help you create a chain of artistic ideas. Most of us are trapped in life- part of the rat race, trying to compete with each other wherein we don’t take time to appreciate ourselves leave alone those around us whereas, Mother Nature is a source of Life and abundantly provides for all our needs. Thus, most of my works are inspired by Nature”, she says.

Work in Progress

The designing starts with conceptualizing and illustrating snippets of zentangles and mandalas which get rejected, selected, refined and reformed several times before the master design for the accessory can be finalized! Here’s Jaya with the initial illustration style which she sketched.

THE CONCEPT AND MASTER DESIGNS

The concept and master designs are finalized! Jaya talks about what the story behind the designs are and what has inspired her designs for the “Wings and Petals” collection. She concentrates on enhancing each design of these original designs to give them a signature finesse and styling that she tells you, “This is a Jayalakshmi Thankachy piece!”

The theme for the “WINGS AND PETALS” Collection of stoles, scarves and ties, includes muses from nature; mainly Dragonflies, Cranes, Flowers and few other interesting elements from the land and water worlds. Dragonflies symbolizes change and self-realization.Their flight symbolizes going beyond the obvious in search of a deeper aspect of Life. Cranes are used in the Asian cultures as symbols of happiness and eternal youth, longevity and good fortune. Flowers bring out mystical feelings and sweet memories. They are significant in expressing love, friendship, gratitude, harmony and sympathy. Jaya assimilates all these elements of nature to create designs in the form of Mandalas and Zentangles.
